PSU Graduate Student Pioneer of Dual Degree Program with French Business School

Updated:
PITTSBURG, KANSAS -

The world of international business will become first hand for a Pittsburg State University graduate student soon to become the first in a dual degree program with La Rochelle Business School in France.

Dane Longan currently works in the financial aid assistance office at PSU. He's getting his MBA through the Kelce School of Business . But next semester he heads to France where the graduate student will study business abroad, simultaneously earning a degree from the La Rochelle school of business.

Dr. Linden Dalecki, with the PSU Kelce School of Business and coordinator of the new dual degree program says, "They end up with our MBA plus the French masters in management. Two degrees in the same period roughly the same cost."

Longan says it's a valuable opportunity because, "One of the issues expanding a company overseas is not being able to adapt to them because we are associated with what our values are."

Longan wants a career in international marketing and says his first semester will be in classes but the second will be an internship at the company of his choice.

Longan says, "You can see in a textbook, they have values that are different than ours. Whenever you go into it, it's wow. It's culture shock and there's no way to prepare for it than being in the middle of it."

Dalecki says understanding the culture and being there brings Longan better employability than just someone who takes classes on international business.

Dalecki says his international business class is good, "But I can't do as good a job at explaining all the nuances of French culture as a student can experience through direct interaction with that management culture. It's an entirely different negotiation style, totally different management style, some of it will be frustrating for Dane. But all of it will be great learning experience."

While Dane's classes at La Rochelle will be in English he knows it's important to learn the language of the land.

Longan says, "I'm kind of learning on my own. I know a little bit of the basics."

In the partnership three French students will come to study here, who may have a better grasp on English.

Longan says, "I keep rolling my r's which is a Spanish thing . It's hard."

Longan heads for France in August and will get language lessons at the La Rochelle school of business.

Dalecki says international exporting has big benefits for students to understand in the state of Kansas from Pittsco to Excell industries which won exporter of the year.
