Powell, MO Residents Pitch In to Fix Historic Bridge

Updated:
MCDONALD COUNTY, MISSOURI - Community members in Powell, Missouri pitch in to repair a historic bridge.

Volunteers nailed down wooden planks to cover the 210ft stretch of the Powell Bridge which runs over a portion of Sugar Creek.

The iron bridge was built in 1915 and was originally intended for horse drawn carriages and buggies.

Instead of tearing down the old bridge, the historical society fought to keep it, and the county built a modern bridge right beside it last year. The society is now restoring it as a walking bridge.

"We have a long ways to go, because we're going to put benches, flower pots, some other seating areas, some child proofing so they don't slide off into the creek. We don't want that. And planning lots of events, so people can just come out and enjoy, sugar creek, big sugar creek,” says Powell Historical Preservation Society Treasurer Beverly Prentice.

The historical society hopes to have the bridge ready to go by august, to celebrate its 100th birthday.
