KDOT constructing new passing lanes on U.S. 400 southeast of Fredonia

Updated:
CHANUTE, KANSAS -

This week the Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) began work to construct passing lanes on U.S. 400 in Wilson County. The project starts four miles southeast of the junction of U.S. 400 and K-47 and continues southeast for 2½ miles. A new passing lane will be constructed for eastbound traffic, and the existing westbound passing lane is being extended.

The asphalt passing lanes will be 12 feet wide. The contractor is removing the existing concrete highway shoulders at the locations where the passing lanes are to be added or extended. Earthwork on the eastbound passing lane is set to begin next Monday, May 18, with construction on the westbound lane later this summer. Paving is expected to be complete by early October, weather permitting.

Flaggers and a pilot car will guide one-lane traffic through the work zones. Traffic can expect delays of 15 minutes or less. A 12-foot driving lane width restriction will be in effect for wide loads within the project limits. KDOT awarded Shilling Construction Company of Manhattan, Kan., the $4.7 million construction contract.

Tim Burton, construction engineer at the Independence KDOT office, reminds drivers to watch for the signs and flaggers, reduce speed through the work zone and “Give ‘Em a Brake!” Persons with questions concerning this project may contact Burton at (620) 331-3760 or Priscilla Petersen at 1-877-550-5368.
