Medical Mystery- Part 1 & 2

Medical professionals across the country are perplexed by an unexplained condition in children that surfaced after last year's nationwide Enterovirus D68 outbreak.

A total of 115 children in various states experienced a highly rare response to the virus, which led to polio-like paralyisis.

As the enterovirus outbreak spread across the nation, cases of the polio-like condition began to appear in children of all different ages, across 34 states.

No two cases are the same, which has made it difficult for medical professionals and researchers to find a common thread.

For 14-year-old Billy Sticklen of Joplin, what began as just a common cold, quickly progressed into a life-changing medical mystery.

The Enterovirus D68 outbreak in 2014 sickened millions of people, and for just over 100 children, the virus caused a polio-like condition.

14-year-old Billy Sticklen of Joplin experienced a rare response to the virus that attacked his nervous system to the point of paralysis.

Medical professionals say his nerves can be regenerated through working his muscles.

Nearly 8 months following Billy's initial symptoms of paralysis, physical, occupational and aquatherapy methods have proven to be successful, as Billy continues his journey to recovery.
