Alexander Sewell charged w/ 2nd Degree Murder

Updated May 28, 2015 1:09 PM:  On 5-18-15 at 200 E Zora #38 in Joplin Jasper County MO Alexander Sewell knowing caused the death of another. He did so through the use of a deadly weapon.

On 5/18/15 at 200 E Zora #38 in Joplin, Jasper County, MO Alexander Sewell and his roommate, James Swatsenbarg began to argue over Sewell's attitude. The two were in the living room of their residence at the time. Swatsenberg yelled at Sewell. Sewell pointed a loaded 12 gauge shotgun at Swatsenberg. Sewell discharged the shotgun, striking Swatsenberg in the chest. Swatsenberg died as a result of the single gunshot wound to his chest.

Arraignement on new charges scheduled for tomorrow (5/29).

Updated May 28, 2015 11 PM:  Sewell has been charged with 2nd Degree Murder and Armed Criminal Action. His bond has been set at $500,000.00.

Updated May 21, 2015 10:40 AM:  The Joplin Police Department has classified the investigation of the shooting death of James Swatsenberg as a homicide investigation. The autopsy indicates that the victim died as a result of a single gunshot wound

Alexander C. Sewell has been formally charged withe Unlawful Possession of a Firearm Class C Felony, Missouri Revised Statute 571.070. His bond has been set at $10,000.00 cash only.

On May 18th 2015 at 8:18 p.m. Joplin 911 received a call of a shooting at K-Wood Mobile Estates 200 East Zora lot 38. On arrival officers found the victim, James Swatsenberg, 49,  deceased in the residence due to an apparent gunshot wound.

The victim's roommate was on scene at the time of the shooting. The roommate is currently in custody on the charge of being a felon in possession of a firearm.

An autopsy is scheduled for later today. This investigation is continuing and more information will be released as it becomes available.

    After reviewing the Kansas Highway Patrol's investigation, the Cherokee County Kansas Attorney will not file charges against the driver of the van. On May 8th, 2018, two cyclists from Germany were riding on Highway 66 near mile marker 1.8 when they were hit by a 2013 Chrysler Town and Country van. The cyclists, 71-year-old Heinz Gerd Buchel and 74-year-old Harry Jung, died at the scene. The highway patrol report states that the van was traveling west in the right lane of K-66 wh...
