Stormy Weather Looms as Pools Get Set to Open this Holiday Weekend

Updated:
JOPLIN, MISSOURI - After pools have been sitting open to the elements all winter, Michael Queen clears out debris stuck in the pool's vacuum.

“It's just a lot of sharp little rocks. I mean there's not a whole lot in here, but just a little bit will mess up the vacuum,” says Aquatic Supervisor Queen.

Joplin's Aquatic Center has been getting a deep clean the last two weeks.

Lifeguards power wash floors, scoop out bits from the pool bottom, and wax slides.

“It helps with the safety issue. If there's a lot of stains or leaves or anything in the bottom of the pool, especially in the deep end people can mistake it for people that are underneath the water or just safety hazards mostly.”

Come opening day this pool is usually packed with kids, but with the stormy weather moving in pool officials are afraid many will be too afraid to stick their toe in the water.

“We probably won't go to the pool this weekend because it's going to be stormy and cold,” says Sarcoxie mother Tiffany Straw.

“When it's raining it's not fun because it's cold and it basically just makes your body go numb and you can't enjoy it,” says 11-year-old Dixie Straw.

While it may deter parents and the older children, the rain won't stop the younger ones from making a splash.

“I wanna go because it's funner than the rain,” says 6-year-old Kydalin Black.

From Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day Joplin's three pools see about 60,000 people.

It's a summer season pool crews and kids have been counting down for all year.

“It's long anticipated. We've all been waiting for it over the winter and i think everyone's ready to get going with it,” says Queen.

Joplin's water parks will only stay open if temperatures reach at least seventy degrees, which may mean a slow start to the summer season

“Even if there's still rain coming, we'll try and open as long as the temperature allows. We'll go ahead and try and open."

Pools not only in Joplin, but for the most part all across the Four States gear up to open this holiday weekend.

MSSU Avoids Million Dollar Fine By Tweaking Its Tuition Increase

Tuition is still going up at Missouri Southern State University, but it's tweaking the cost increase to credit hours to avoid a state fine. Missouri Southern's Board of Governors approved a 15 percent increase in student tuition last April, upping credit hours by $30. But state education law doesn't allow tuition increases beyond the consumer price index. To avoid a $1.1 million fine, MSSU adjusted down the tuition increase to $20 more per credit.
