NEO secures storm shelters as part of the Synar Farm renovation project

Updated:
MIAMI, OKLAHOMA -

As part of the “Building on Tradition” campaign, Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College (NEO) installed three new storm shelters as part of the Synar Farm renovation project. Two shelters are located on the south side of the new arena addition, and one is located on the north side of Synar Farm.

NEO purchased the cellars locally from Route 66 Rental and Miami Engineering Services, LLC. The shelters meet FEMA standards and are reinforced with 12 gauge steel. They have a custom design with a three-point latch system and a locking device. This design allows the user to open the door from the inside even if the door is locked or damaged. Each shelter holds approximately 12 people.

“Student, staff and community safety is always a top priority,” said NEO President Dr. Jeff Hale. “The addition of three new storm shelters at the Synar facility gives us all some added comfort when it comes to student safety.”

There have already been 30 confirmed tornadoes in Oklahoma this month, according to City of Miami Emergency Management Director Glenda Longan and the Ottawa County Emergency Management Director JoeDan Morgan.

“Student safety is of the utmost importance, so it just made sense to include the shelters during the ongoing renovations,” said Dept. Chair of Agriculture Tyler Dewey. “We can all breathe a little easier when major storm systems come through. I am so thankful NEO's administration secured the shelters for the farm.”
