Chetopa, KS Revives Draft Horse Pulling Competition

Updated:
CHETOPA, KANSAS - The city of Chetopa revives draft pulling competition after a 50 year lull.

To stay in the game, teams of two horses have three tries to pull cinder blocks twenty feet.

In each round, the horses pull their own combined weight, that's anywhere from three thousand to four thousand pounds. Then a thousand more pounds are added in following  rounds.

Competition host, 83-year-old Wayne Furnas has been training draft horses since he was four.

"They gotta be like any athlete. They gotta be hard and ready. And that's the best thing about working 'em. I enjoy driving them. Every day that it ain't raining or I can get out there I work ‘em,” says Furnas.

Competitors from as far as Iowa competed to raise money for the Chetopa show team to be able to compete in the area state fairs.
