Blasters Blank RedHawks for Series Win

Updated:
Press Release Joplin Blasters:

The Blasters posted the first shutout win of their inaugural 2015 season with a 4-0 victory over Fargo-Moorhead Tuesday afternoon on school day at Newman Outdoor Field.

Joplin (3-2) has already won the three-game series after taking game one 10-8 Monday. The Blasters and RedHawks (0-6) were locked in a pitcher's duel from the outset and went scoreless through the first five innings. Joplin finally broke through in the top of the sixth. Maikol Gonzalez led off the inning with a hard line drive single to left. Oscar Mesa laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt and moved Gonzalez into scoring position. Yasser Gomez then punched a groundball base hit up the middle into center field that scored Gonzalez from second.

The Blasters scratched another run across in the eighth with a two-out rally. Yasser Gomez reached on a single to left, and Jake Taylor brought him in with a groundball triple that bounced over the bag at third and into the left field corner. Joplin plated two more insurance runs in the ninth as Juan Medina doubled to the gap in right-center.

Joplin starting pitcher Jorge Martinez was dynamite again on the mound. Martinez (2-0) went six innings and gave up just four hits with four strikeouts and two walks to pick up the win. Nearly as good, Fargo-Moorhead starter Brandon Mann took the loss. Mann (0-1) lasted eight innings and allowed two earned runs on six hits with two strikeouts and one walk. In a non-save situation, Blasters closer Winston Abreu struck out the side in the ninth for a second time this season. Abreu has struck out 10 in four innings of relief work through the first five games.

Offensively, Yasser Gomez led the Blasters with a 2-for-4 day. Gomez drove in a run and scored a run. Maikol Gonzalez and Steven Tinoco each had a base hit and extended their hitting streaks to the first five games. Juan Medina went 1-for-4 with a two-run scoring double.

The Blasters and RedHawks play the series finale at 7:02 Wednesday night. Joplin returns home Friday for the start of a three-game weekend series against the Winnipeg Goldeyes.
