Blasters Win in Extras for First Series Sweep

Updated:

Press Release Joplin Blasters:

The Blasters posted the first series sweep of their inaugural 2015 season with a 3-0, ten-inning victory over Fargo-Moorhead Wednesday night at Newman Outdoor Field.

Joplin (4-2) took all three games of their first road series to extend the winning streak to three. The Blasters and RedHawks bested their five-inning scoreless start from Tuesday afternoon by going nine innings without a run. Joplin went to work in the top of the tenth. Maikol Gonzalez led off the inning with a line drive single to center. Oscar Mesa, attempting to bunt the runner up to second, reached on an infield single. Yasser Gomez then delivered the game's first run on a base hit to left that scored Gonzalez. One out later, Jake Taylor provided some insurance runs with a triple to the gap in right-center. Both Mesa and Gomez scored for the three-run cushion.

The Blasters pitching staff continued its dominance since the end of game one against Fargo-Moorhead. Joplin pitchers held the RedHawks scoreless over the last 22 innings of the series. Kristhiam Linares picked up the win in relief. Linares (1-0) worked the ninth and struck out two. Ty Kelley took the loss for Fargo-Moorhead. Kelley (0-1) pitched an inning-and-a-third and allowed two earned runs on four hits with one strikeout. Winston Abreu gave up a walk but struck out the final two of the game to earn his third save of the season. Joplin starter Nestor Molina lasted seven innings and only gave up four hits with six strikeouts and no walks.

At the plate, Jake Taylor went 2-for-5 with a triple and a single. Taylor collected two RBIs as well. Steven Tinoco also had a two-hit night for Joplin. Chad Mozingo went 2-for-5 in defeat for Fargo-Moorhead. Each team made two errors in the contest. The RedHawks only had one base runner reach third all night. Only three reached second.

Joplin returns home Friday night for the start of a three-game weekend series against the Winnipeg Goldeyes. For 2015 ticket information and promotion specials at Joe Becker Stadium, call 417-622-4838 or visit the Blasters website at www.joplinblasters.com.
