Koon sentenced to one year of unsupervised probation for stealing shotgun shells

On May 20, 2015, Garrett M. Koon was sentenced to 1 year in county jail, but that was suspended. He will serve one year of unsupervised probation, must pay $233.76 in restitution, complete Ozark Center Assessment. Court costs were waived.

Probable Cause:

On 3/16/15 on 1701 hours Garrett Mitchell Koon attempted to steal multiple value packs of shotgun ammunition from Wal-Mart 2705 S Grand Ave, Carthage, Jasper County Missouri but fled on foot when officers arrived on scene per Carthage Police Department report number #150915. 

A short time later on 3-16-15 at 1844 hours Koon returned and stole 19 value packs of 12 gauge shotgun ammunition, 100 shells in each case, valued at $443.43 from Walmart 2705 S Grand Ave, Carthage MO, Jasper County, Missouri per Carthage Police Department report #150924.  

On 3/16/15 at 1901 hours, Koon stole 8 value packs of 12 gauge shotgun shell ammunition, 100 shells in each pack, valued at $183.76 from Walmart 1212 S. Madison Ave.  Webb City, Jasper County Missouri per Webb City Police Department report number #15031647109.  

The total value of the stolen ammunition in Jasper County,  was $627.19. The total number of of shotgun shells were 2,700.  Koon's theft was recorded on survellance video which was entered into evidence.  Koon admitted to stealing the ammunition from the Webb City, Carthage Wal-mart stores.

Local authorities recovered more than 8,000 shotgun shells Thursday in their investigation of a Joplin man suspected of shoplifting 19 cases of ammunition from the Wal-Mart store in Carthage and committing similar thefts at Wal-Mart stores in other towns.

Garrett M. Koon, 23, was arrested Tuesday and charged with theft. The Joplin Police Department special weapons and tactics team, members of the Jasper County Drug Task Force and Carthage police arrested Koon when they served a search warrant at his residence on the southwest side of the city.

While none of the stolen ammunition was found at his home, a second search warrant was served on a phone that led to the recovery of 8,000 shells in possession of someone who had bought them from the suspect not knowing that they were stolen, according to Carthage police Chief Greg Dagnan.

Dagnan said Koons is suspected of having committed similar thefts from Wal-Mart stores in Webb City, Monett and Neosho in recent days. He was being held Thursday at the Jasper County Jail on a $15,000 bond.
