From the Miami News Record:

A former Commerce Public School coach waived his right to a jury trial and pleaded guilty on Wednesday to raping a 17-year-old female high school student.

Thomas Alan Fenderson, 44, of Miami, entered the guilty plea Ottawa County District Court in Miami to three counts of second-degree rape.

Fenderson entered the plea without an agreement with the district attorney's office. Ottawa County Assistant District Attorney Rogers Hughes said after the hearing he is requesting Fenderson serve a 15-year-sentence.

The teen reportedly told friends that she had had a crush on Fenderson since sixth grade, according to court documents. Fenderson confessed to a consensual sexual relationship with the student, a probable cause affidavit said.

School employees can be prosecuted for rape until a student is age 20.

A pre-sentence investigation was ordered and sentencing was set for July 24.

Fenderson resigned from the Commerce School District on May 15, 2014. He is free on $75,000 bail.

Tuition is still going up at Missouri Southern State University, but it's tweaking the cost increase to credit hours to avoid a state fine. Missouri Southern's Board of Governors approved a 15 percent increase in student tuition last April, upping credit hours by $30. But state education law doesn't allow tuition increases beyond the consumer price index. To avoid a $1.1 million fine, MSSU adjusted down the tuition increase to $20 more per credit.
