MODOT receives several phone calls about Newton County construction

Newton County, Missouri - Donna Marcus says she has extreme vertigo caused by a damaged nerve from her ear to the brain.

"It's like a roller coaster to me," says Marcus.

Marcus says her health is rough, just like the highway outside her home.

"It's gravely.  It's like an old country road," says Marcus.  "I mean, there's a lot of elderly people in Seneca."

"I have had several phone calls," says Steve Campbell, a MODOT engineer.

Phone calls of complaints, MODOT says, regarding a 13-mile chip and seal of Highway 43, near Seneca.  Work includes putting a layer of oil and gravel on asphalt, which maintains the condition of asphalt.

Nearby auto body shop worker Michael Star's family has recently contributed to his business in an unfortunate way.

"I asked my wife, I said, what happened for that crack in the windshield?  She said it happened on 43.  She says crazy thing is, I was downtown earlier at the Dollar store, and the lady worked there, it happened to her, and the lady in line!  Yeah, that's crazy," says Star with Vince's Auto Body.

People like Marcus say if MODOT has a tight budget, why do this work?  The road was fine before.  But MODOT says the work is needed to prevent bigger asphalt repair projects.  Chip and seals are more cost efficient than putting a new layer of asphalt on top.

"Most people want and love hot mix overlays, they're very smooth, they're very quick, and you don't have the issues surrounding the chip seal.  But they're also three times as costly," says Campbell.

MODOT says there's about one or two days left on the project, much to the delight of Marcus.

"We need to wash our car so we can find out how many pings we've got," says Marcus.

MODOT says it's important to adhere to speed limits in this construction zone to reduce kicked-up gravel.  MODOT also says if you do get a cracked windshield or other vehicle damage while traveling in this construction zone. make sure you call the contractor's phone number, listed along the construction route, to file a claim.  According to MODOT, the contractor is responsible for damages to vehicles traveling on this highway.
