Attorney General’s office to lead prosecution in Montgomery County case

Topeka, KS -

The Kansas Attorney General's Office will lead any potential prosecution of Alex Garcia, 22, who is being held in connection with a shooting that involved a Kansas law enforcement officer in Montgomery County, Attorney General Derek Schmidt said today.

Garcia was arrested near Liberty following a manhunt that began Thursday evening. Formal charges have not yet been filed. The attorney general's office has assumed responsibility for the case at the request of the Montgomery County Attorney's Office.

Two additional persons apprehended in connection with the case are pending extradition to Oklahoma, and the attorney general's office is not handling their potential prosecutions.

Criminal charges are merely accusations, and the suspect is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
