Three FEMA Kitchens Being Installed Next to The Webb City Farmers Market

Updated:
WEBB CITY, MISSOURI - Farmers at the Webb City Farmers Market will soon have access to new kitchens, waiting to be installed next door to the market pavilion.

Three mobile FEMA kitchens were brought over from Joplin High School's temporary site at Northpark Mall used after the tornado.

Webb city bought the kitchens with a $60,000grant before they were to be turned over to auction.

Because the kitchens are regularly inspected by the county, growers will be able to process their produce and store it for later sale.

“That'll have two benefits for us. One, then the farmer will be able to make more money out of their products because, of course, they're already doing this at home. But when they do it at home they can't sell it to the public, they can only give it away or use it for their family. And the other bonus is that during the winter, we'll have a lot more products to sell because they will have preserved this food,” says Eileen Nichols Volunteer Market Manager.

Farmers will process value added foods strawberries blended into jam, tomatoes canned as salsa, or milk turned into frozen yogurt.

The kitchens are equipped to serve a thousand people a day. The Webb City Farmers Market also plans to use the resource for canning classes and food prep.

The city will also be able to use the space for events and in the event of a natural disaster.
