Two suspects in custody after attempting to use five counterfeit $20 bills in Joplin

Update 6/15:  Gregory Bennett & Zachery Lane have been charged with forgery.

6/13:  Two 23-year-old male suspects are in custody after attempting to use five counterfeit $20 bills to pay for a hotel room in Joplin.

A clerk at Baymont Inn & Suites, at 3510 South Range Line Road, notified authorities at 4:10 this morning when she noticed all the bills given had the same serial number.

The suspects, both from Branson, MO, were arrested for forgery when officers arrived to their hotel room.

Authorities say counterfeit money reports have been ongoing in the Joplin area, so they warn residents to be vigilant.

"A lot of times that money is already spent, so there's a good chance that these bills are already circulating out there and passed through," said Sergeant Brian Henderson, Joplin Police Department. "It's also good not only for people that collect money, but also as citizens, when you get change from a convenience store or grocery store, take that opportunity and look at your money before you just put it in your wallet."

Charges against the suspects have been submitted to the Newton County prosecutor's office.

Officials expect formal charges to be filed by Monday.
