Kansas Lottery Review Board Will Soon Announce Its Recommendation for New Southeast Kansas Casino

Updated:
Under the Kansas Expanded Lottery Act, Kansas can have a casino in each of its four regions, a process the Kansas Lottery has been working to fill since 2007. Southeast Kansas is the last to be considered.

"We can have these casinos in only four different places in Kansas. We have three of those, of course already filled, in Dodge City, Mulvane, and Kansas City. So this is the last one of the four. And yeah so we are anxious and excited about getting that done and getting all of them on board,” says Kansas Lottery Gaming Facilities Director Keith Kocher.

In Southeast Kansas three proposed casinos are on the table, two in Crawford County "Kansas Crossing" and "Camptown Casino" and one in Cherokee County "Castle Rock". Kocher says they are expected to create hundreds of jobs and money for the area.

“Two in Crawford County have estimated revenues in the 35-45 million dollar range and the one in Cherokee county has estimated revenues at 75-80 million. Although some of the experts have estimates on all the casinos, somewhat less than those estimates."

Kocher says depending on which applicant is picked local counties will share 3% of the revenues, and the state 22%.

After months of looking over contracts and background checks the Lottery Review Board is excited to announce its bid to the gaming commission on Tuesday.

"It's been a long and interesting process, so we're anxious to get them all buttoned up and on board."

After the recommendation next week, the seven member Kansas Gaming and Racing Commission's Review Board will make the final decision on July 2nd.

Kocher says any one of the casinos could be open within a year to 16 months.
