Joplin Residents Claim Free Trees to Repopulate Their Neighborhood

Updated:
JOPLIN, MISSOURI - Joplin residents flock to the Parks and Recreation office for free trees.

About a hundred people stood in line early this morning to claim some native trees.

200 trees were donated by Forest Releaf and the Missouri Department of Conservation to help repopulate the rea after thousands were lost in the tornado.

First time home buyer Catherine Vessey moved from Austin, Texas a year ago. She's looking forward to having shade in her bare yard.

"I hear from people who have lived in the neighborhood over thirty years that that neighborhood was covered in trees. I mean just covered. And if you go on google map you can look at the neighborhood and you can't see all the houses because of all the trees. And if you drive through that neighborhood now there's no trees at all. So to bring back the trees in the neighborhood is going to be great. "

Dogwoods, oaks, redbuds, and many more varieties were available.

Residents living in the tornado zone could pick up as many as three trees, and Joplin residents living outside the zone one.
