Father's Day overnight camping event held at Pittsburg Aquatic Center

PITTSBURG, KANSAS - Fathers and sons in Pittsburg gain some special Father's Day memories at an overnight camping event held at the Pittsburg Aquatic Center.

A night of swimming, camping and a movie on the lawn provided a good opportunity for dads to get some one on one time with their kiddos.

Whether two or ten years old, kids are pretty excited about the idea of camping with dad.

"I went on the big slides over there and I'm just five," said Arlo Walrop, 5-year-old.

"We're camping out at the pool," said Jaycee Patterson, 7-year-old.

The dads say it's a great opportunity to introduce young kids to camping in a comfortable environment.

"We'd never been camping together, and I think it's best to start small with stuff like this," said Nate Wright, father.

"It's a good time where we can come together and talk about things we don't tell mom about," said Doug Patterson, father.

"No girls allowed," said Jesse Patterson, 6-year-old.

Organizers say parents taking a break from work to spend one on one time with their child should be a priority.

"It is important that the parents take time away from their busy schedules, and the children's busy schedules, to really stop and just enjoy each other," said Sara Vacca, event coordinator.

Dads say doing that is one of the most rewarding parts of being a father.

"Being a dad, it's a pretty special thing," Wright said. "It changes your life."

"It's the most important thing to me," said Daniel Warlop, father. "Anything I get to do with my son is special, but this is a lot of fun. It's something I used to do when I was little. It's hard to find these opportunities, but it makes it easy to come out to the pool like this."

And the little ones are also just as grateful.

"He's the best dad in the whole world," Jaycee Patterson said.

"I love my dad more than the outer space ends," Arlo Warlop said.

This is the third annual Father's Day overnight camp out at the Pittsburg Aquatic Center.

Organizers say they also are planning a mother-son outing in August.
