Peace Lutheran Church Welcomes Neighbors to Share Its Storm Shelters

Updated:
JOPLIN, MISSOURI - A church once destroyed in the Joplin tornado offers a safe haven to area residents at its new location.

Peace Lutheran church now rebuilt on N. St. Louis acquired two FEMA shelters last year and welcomes the public to take advantage of them in case of a storm.

The two shelters can hold thirty four people each and the church wants their neighbors to know that they are always unlocked and available to the public in case of emergency.

"Our church having been blown away one block from the high school was so traumatic for us, but such a blessing. A silver lining has occurred with our being able to build on a new spot on N. St. Louis and these tornado shelters are an added blessing to us and we just feel like we're in a neighborhood and we want to be a good neighbor,” says Peace Lutheran Church community chairperson Lana Nelson.

The former FEMA shelters came from the FEMA trailer park near the airport and were moved to the church with grant money.

On Thursday at 7pm the church will have a community meeting to discuss disaster preparedness and a presentation from The 4 State Search and Rescue team. It recently returned helping victims of the Nepal earthquake.
