Classic Cars Racing Down Route 66 Stop in Joplin For Fuel

Updated:
Classic cars make their way down Route 66 as part of the Hemmings Motor News Great Race.

More than a hundred cars, models as old as 1915 and as new as 1970, stopped to refuel at Joplin 44 Petro Truck Stop as they travel the Mother Road.

This is the third time since the great race started in 1983 that the timed endurance race has followed Route 66.

And for cars like navigator Josh Hull's 1932 Ford Speedster there are many challenges keeping up on the highway.

"As you see we got an open cockpit so we're exposed to the elements. The first day pouring down rain so we were soaked. Now we're exposed to the sun and road grit, grime, rocks getting thrown at you, bugs…and wind we're trying to keep on track with our directions," says Hull.

The cars began their journey yesterday in Kirkwood, Missouri and will arrive at Santa Monica Pier next Saturday, a total of 2,400.
