Jasper County issues 3 same-sex marriage licenses today

Updated:
JASPER COUNTY, MISSOURI - In a 5-4 vote, the Supreme Court declared same-sex marriage legal in all 50 states.

As history was made across the country today, it was also a day for the books in Jasper County, as the first three same-sex marriage licenses were issued.

A male couple received their license this morning, and two female couples this afternoon.

Joplin residents Amber Grewing and Kimberly Slife are the first female same-sex couple to receive their marriage license in Jasper County.

The couple has been together for the past three years.

They now have 30 days to get married, which they're planning to do as soon as possible.

"It was spontaneous," Grewing said. "It's something that we've talked about for a while. It's allowed us to be a part of history."

Those who work at the Jasper County Recorder's Office say they issued two other same-sex marriage licenses today, and expect more soon.

"We've had several phone calls from people inquiring what they need to do," said Charlotte Pickering, Jasper County Recorder of Deeds.

Pickering says they were well prepared to begin issuing the licenses.

Some of the "bride and groom" wording was changed prior to the ruling.

"We went live with new software June 1, with this anticipated," Pickering said.

That way, couples like Grewing and Slife did not have to wait any longer than they already have.

"It's something that can make our family complete," Grewing said.

And they're just as excited for the other families across the country who also now have this opportunity.

"It's all about love, and not what you look like, or what sex you are, or anything like that," Grewing said.

Members of the recorder's office say in order to be issued a license, you must give your social security number, and provide valid identification and $60 in cash.
