Air Force medics receive interactive training on MSSU campus

Updated:
JOPLIN, MISSOURI - Members of the 184th Kansas Air National Guard Medical Group have received some special hands-on training at Missouri Southern State University this week.

After a couple days of classroom sessions, the 10 Air Force medics receiving training visited three different stations to apply what they've learned.

Volunteers played the roles of actors suffering from fake gunshot wounds, illnesses or other injuries.

A childbirth was also simulated.

Participants say hands-on learning is the best way to prepare for these scenarios, which could happen in real life.

"Most of the time, when we're confronted with something under stress, which usually we're under stress if we're going to go take care of somebody that's critically ill or injured, we fall back on our experiences," said Brett Peine, director of EMS at MSSU. "If we don't have experiences, what do we fall back on? In this case, if we've had at least experience with these simulated patients, they can fall back on that."

"It gives us something to pull from, so we can think back and remember what we did in a training environment, and hopefully put that into a real scenario," said Clint Bradfield, superintendent of nursing services for the 184th Kansas Air National Guard.

The Air Force medics that completed the training could be deployed at anytime, either overseas, or on a state mission, should a natural disaster occur.
