Semi carrying hazardous materials crashes, catches fire on I-44

Updated:

A crash on the westbound lane of Interstate 44 between Miami and Afton at mile marker 305 this morning closed traffic for more than two and a half hours.

The road was closed at 3:50 a.m. and reopened at 6:26 a.m.

The Oklahoma State Highway Patrol said a semi truck hit the center wall and caught on fire three miles east of Afton.

No one was injured, but the truck is considered a complete loss.

The Oklahoma State Highway Patrol said the truck was carrying hazardous material but would not elaborate on the types of material. The Patrol said everything was consumed by the fire.

According to the Oklahoma State Highway Patrol, the Miami Fire Dept. is dealing with clean-up efforts.

The Patrol said the clean-up process will take most of the day, because the burned materials on the truck will have to cool for a few hours before it can be removed.

The Oklahoma State Highway Patrol expects everything to be cleaned up by this evening.

The Oklahoma State Highway Patrol, Miami Fire Dept., Afton Fire Dept., Grand River Dam Authority Police and Ottawa County Sheriff's Dept. responded to the scene.
