CARTHAGE, MISSOURI -

Carthage residents take a moment to pause and remember the men who lost their lives at the Battle of Carthage. A battle that took place a 154 years ago today.

Color Guard march and reenactors lead a prayer service paying respect to the 50 men who lost their lives and the 150 who were wounded in the battle. It was just weeks before the Civil War officially began at the Battle of Bull Run.

Missouri Governor Claiborne Fox Jackson was retreating south with Missouri State Guard troops to Arkansas when he met U.S. troops led by Cornel Franz Sigal.

The State Guard victory in Carthage later set the stage for a showdown a month later at Wilson's creek.

"You have a governor leading troops which was something that was unusual. The 3rd Missouri Volunteer Infantry were largely German immigrants who were very strongly committed to a Republican form of government. That's why they came to America and for them to fight here, why this was a chance for them to preserve freedom, to preserve a government of the people, by the people, for the people,” says Missouri Department of Natural Resources Natural Resource Manager David Roggensees.

Leading up to the vesper service some reenactors retraced the nine mile battlefield along Civil War road.

Next weekend reenactors will be camping at the Battle of Carthage Historic Site.
