Joplin Creates a Citizens Academy to Give Insight on Local Government Operations

Joplin is creating a Citizen's Academy to give residents an inside look at how the city operates.

The free program runs for nine weeks in August and September. There will be nine, two hour sessions explaining all the city departments including tours of fire and police stations, the public works centers and some parks. Participants will even sit in on a budget work session.

Modeled after the Citizen's Police Academy, officials say there are big benefits to meeting the people who serve and the better communication that comes from knowing how the city operates.

Assistant city manager Brian Kelly says, "I think people when they have the opportunity to learn more about what we do here at city hall, I think that helps improve the level of dialogue we're able to  have in the community."

And Captain Darren Gallup with the police department says that's been a result of its academy. "Once  they know how to get a hold of us, they know the right person to get a hold of, and what type of situation they have, they're  more apt to report crime to us which we like.

The class is limited in size so it's first come first served.
The time to apply for the program is now at city  hall or on the city's website.
