Toddler Suffers 3rd Degree Burns from Hot Rubber Tiles

Updated:
JOPLIN, MISSOURI -

Mike Redshaw with the Joplin Fire Department measures the ground temperature by the shed where Liam Evans was burned playing outside.

Over here I’m getting about a hundred and forty five degrees. in the shade it drops down 116 degrees,” says Redshaw.

An almost thirty degree difference which Liam's dad says proved dangerously hot for the two year old.

"Well my wife was in the back with him and i was in the front mowing the lawn and I just heard my wife screaming and coming around and wasn't sure what happened,” says Liam’s Dad Brian Evans.

His parents rushed him to urgent care after he wandered barefoot onto a small patch of black rubber tiling in front of the shed.

"Immediately it bubbled up and within two to three minutes we had taken him in and put him in an ice bath and the skin we noticed it started to peel back. the bubbles on his feet had burst and it started peeling and back and there was just loose skin everywhere."

Liam suffered third degree burns. Redshaw says many things affect temperature including thermodynamics, how long it’s been baking in the sun, and how strong of a heat absorber it is.

"Obviously boiling water at 220 degrees is gonna cause significant burns in a rapid amount of time. Where 140 degrees, five seconds, with a small child can still cause significant burns,” says Redshaw.

Liam's parents say they never expected the rubber tiles to get that hot.

"From now on he's wearing shoes. All our kids our wearing shoes outside for safety, especially when it's hot,” says Evans.
