Wall Collapses in Girard's Historic Square

The wall supporting a State Farm Insurance Office and a 100-year-old Masonic Lodge in Girard's historic square comes crashing to the ground.

Business workers survey the damage after the wall suddenly collapsed Friday evening. Thankfully, no one was inside of the State Farm located on the first floor, or the Masonic Lodge on the second floor at the time of the crash.

Lori Buckle, owner of neighboring “Buckle's Sweet Treats”, was inside her shop when it happened and says all she could see after the collapse was a thick cloud of dust. Buckle's shop has only been open for a month and buckle says she's worried she may have to relocate.

"My concern right now is the way that it is bowing in that if something is not done we're going to have a domino effect and it's going to take this whole block down. So we are going to be closed until they figure out what they're going to do,” says Buckle.

Secretary of the Girard Masonic Lodge Daniel Murray says "If you could see the wall that those pictures are hanging on that's a fire wall that goes all the way to the ceiling. So it worries, as a councilman and a citizen of Girard yeah it worries me a bunch to see this happening to our community."

Murray says the group has been in the building close to a century. He's worried the lodge's founding documents and antique china may be lost. A portion of the road on East Prairie Ave has been blocked off to traffic and an inspector is coming to survey the damage tomorrow.
