Neosho School Board Discusses New Junior High

Updated:

The Neosho school board this evening discussed design plans for a new junior high school. The design is based largely on input from teachers, parents and architects.

The new school will be built north of "George Washington Carver Elementary" on Kodiak Road.
A new entrance would be created from Kodiak Road -- and an existing bus entrance from maple drive to the elementary would be turned into a dual purpose drive.

The 130-thousand square foot school would be two stories -- organized into a system of eight neighborhoods with five classrooms and a lab in each.
It would also have a two-story gym.

"With this neighborhood concept, all of the teachers within one subject manner are all teamed together within that. You can pull students out, you can open classrooms up so that you can do team teaching, so it allows for more flexibility for the teachers, and for the educational experience," said Eric McCune, project manager with Sapp Design Associates.
Special education classrooms will be in the southwest corner -- which will also be the FEMA shelter for the whole school

"You try and create an area that is what we would call a hardened shell, so that you may have limited doors into that," said McCune, "but even within that space, you're allowed to have separate rooms in that."
"It's all of our music department, and so there's lots of big rooms there with the big orchestra room, a big band room, a big choir room, all of those big rooms, that's where our kids would go for the tornado," said Junior High Assistant Principal Keith Rook.

The design fits into the budget -- but still needs final approval.

"As far as I know we're pretty close to solid on this plan. Everything seems to be coming together, it seems to be roughly fitting into our budget. I mean there's some tweaking that has to be done as with any project but I do believe it's pretty close to fitting in our plan," says Rook.

District voters approved a 24-million dollar bond issue for the project this past April.
The hope is to break ground early next year -- and have it completed for the fall of 2017.
