Shoppers Bargain Hunt at Carthage's Summer Sidewalk Sale

Updated:
CARTHAGE, MISSOURI -

Shoppers look for big bargains on Carthage's Historic Square during the city's annual summer sidewalk sale.

For many businesses it's a time to clean out the closet and make room for new fall items.

Things like lawn equipment, plants, and swim wear were up to ninety percent off the regular price.

The Carthage Chamber of Commerce sponsors the one day event to keep dollars local and stimulate economic growth. One business operator says it's a good draw.

"Compared to a typical day, well at least seven or eight times as many people. There's just a huge difference. And people come and they stay longer because there are other things to keep them and enjoy the atmosphere too,” says Carthage Hardware Co-owner Ray Mathis.

The 16th annual "Greater British Motor Club Car Show" and the farmers market were also held in conjunction with the sidewalk sale, which business owners say is good for attracting new customers to the square and bringing old ones back.
