Volunteers set aside time during heat of day to help homeless

Some volunteers set aside time today to help meet the needs of the homeless in Joplin.  Twenty-four vendors set up booths inside Joplin's Central Christian Center, offering help and services to anyone who is homeless.

The event is sponsored by the Economic Security Corporation.  A homeless count was also taken.

There are two homeless counts each year, one in the summer then another in the winter.  One volunteers says the number of homeless who come to this event varies along with the weather.

"It can fluctuate," says Robin Smith with the Economic Security Corporation.  "This past winter, we actually had a low number, because the day we actually did it it was close to seventy degrees.  It was a pretty nice day.  So I think people just weren't seeking us out."

"The weather is more conducive to being outside and staying put.  From what I understand, from folks who do the street outreach, once they're kind of hunkered down some place in the summertime, they sort of stay there.  They don't come out and seek anything.  A lot of them, not all of them," says Smith.

There were 55 homeless people, mostly med, who came to the resource event last winter.
