Volunteers Host Harry Potter Camp to Fundraise for Camp Mintahama

Updated:
JOPLIN, MISSOURI -

Girl Scouts compete in a game of Quidditch and paint dragon eggs, all part of a new Harry Potter themed retreat at Camp Mintahama. The camp is not only fun- but this is the first year it's a fundraiser. Nearly two years ago “Girl Scouts of the Missouri Heartland" agreed to share costs with the camp. But the chair of "Friends of Camp Mintahama" says the threat of closure is still real.

“Last year was the end of year one and a one of the camps didn't make it through to this year. So there is a real possibility that this may not continue. We're confident about all the wonderful work we're doing here and partnerships with all the great community volunteers we have. But we're not at the end of the road yet,” says Lisa Nelson, Chair of Camp Mintahama.

The group must raise $30,000 by the end of September so about 25 volunteers stepped in to give back.

"Camp means a lot to me personally but it also means a lot to all of the girl scouts that grew up in this area,” says Camp Director Rebecca DePriest.

In this week long Harry Potter fantasy retreat, volunteers will raise about $2,000 in camper registration fees, which officials say makes a big difference in the overall budget.

"Key to us keeping camp open is keeping camp used year round. Last year we installed heat and air in several of the buildings,” says Nelson.

Grants and donations are a big player in keeping camp open, but using camp as a fundraiser was a no brainer.

"Anybody can sell t-shirts, or cookie dough, or wrapping paper to raise money. But this way we gave the girls this amazing experience that we all had as young women and are giving them the experience in addition to raising money to support the facility,” says DePriest.
