PITTSBURG, KANSAS -

Pittsburg State head softball coach Elizabeth Economon is pleased to announce the promotion of Molly Garst to assistant softball coach. Garst served as a graduate assistant working with the infielders last season as the Gorillas finished as both the MIAA regular season and tournament runners-up.

A native of Webb City, Mo., Garst has given lessons and conducted camps and clinics in the area, as well as throughout the United State for several years. She specializes in developing slapper hitters and infielders.

Garst spent four years as a starter at Division I Purdue University, playing left field, third base and short stop. She was a two-time All-Big Ten selection, as well as a First-team All-Mideast Region selection in 2010. She set Purdue records for career stolen bases (130) and runs scored (148) and finished second in career batting average (.362) and doubles (44). She also set the single season record for stolen bases with 43 as a sophomore in 2010. In addition to her success on the field, Garst was also a three-time Academic All-Big Ten Selection and earned CoSIDA Academic All-District honors in 2011 and 2012. Garst was a candidate for the prestigious Lowe's Senior CLASS Award in 2012.

In addition to her coaching and playing experience, Garst also has experience in marketing and development, having worked as a development associate with the John Purdue Club and as an intern with the Indiana Pacers.

Garst played at Webb City high school where she was a four-time All-State selection and helped the Cardinals to state titles in 2004 and 2008.

"We are fortunate to have a coach with as much experience as Coach Garst," Economon said. "She was a great asset to our team as a graduate assistant last year and knows what we need to do to continue that success. Her positive attitued and high energy level will help the program continue to grow."
