PITTSBURG, KANSAS -

The Pittsburg State University football team was tabbed second in both the 2015 Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association Coaches and Media Polls released Tuesday (Aug. 4) at the conference kickoff press event at Sporting Park.

The Gorillas, 2014 MIAA co-champions with an 11-2 overall record, received four of a possible 12 first-place votes in the MIAA Coaches Poll and 13 of 41 first-place votes in the MIAA Media Poll.

Pitt State tallied 114 points in the coaches' poll to place behind 2014 MIAA co-champion Northwest Missouri (118), which received eight first-place and 118 points. The Gorillas defeated the Bearcats, 35-17, at Maryville, Mo., in their head-to-head meeting a year ago.

Central Missouri (92), Central Oklahoma (91) and Missouri Western (82) rounded out positions three through five in the coaches poll.

In the media poll, the Gorillas received 455 points to place second behind the Bearcats, who garnered 28 of 41 first-place votes and 478 points. UCO tallied 382 points to place third in the poll, followed by MWSU (350) and UCM (344).

Pitt State returns 11 players (6 offense, 5 defense) who started five or more games during the 2014 season, including nine returning All-MIAA performers and two players who earned All-America honors a year ago – senior wide receiver Marquise Cushon and junior defensive end Heath Wilson.

The Gorillas open preseason camp Monday, Aug. 10.  Pitt State will make its season debut Thursday, Sept. 3, at Tahlequah, Okla., against Northeastern State. The RiverHawks, who posted an 0-11 record in 2014, were picked last in both the coaches and media polls.
