2015 Maple Leaf Grand Marshals Named

The Maple Leaf committee has selected Brian and Marilyn Bisbee, Executive Directors of the Carthage Crisis Center as the 2015 Maple Leaf Grand Marshals.

Nominations read “Brian and Marilyn offer hope for people that need help which is not something that is common these days. They have generous hearts and souls that have changed lives of those people helped at the Crisis Center.”, “They work to help those in our community everyday. Giving of themselves to not only make a safe place for people to come for help to get themselves back on their feet, but also to help provide assistance with clothing, furniture, food, etc.”, and “Brian and Marilyn have made a huge impact on numerous lives in and around our community. They seem to have a real passion for giving and always do so with a smile.”

Maple Leaf Chair Jeanine Poe added “Every year, the Maple Leaf committee receives many nominations of highly respected citizens who have made significant contributions to the community. We are proud to honor Brian and Marilyn with the title this year!” Each year the Maple Leaf Grand Marshal leads the Maple Leaf Parade, acts as judge at the Three Minutes of Fame Lip Sync Competition, and participates in many other Maple Leaf events.

The 49th Annual Maple Leaf Festival will begin Saturday, October 10th with the Maple Leaf 5K/10K run and 3K color walk/run at 8AM and the Baby and Toddler Pageants at 2PM and 4PM  and Sunday, October 11thwith the Dog Show and Leap & Dash at 1PM and Pageants for ages 2+ starting at 3:30PM. The Maple Leaf Parade will be Saturday, October 17th, beginning its route on the historic downtown Square. Food, art/craft booths and live entertainment on the Square, the annual Marching Band Festival, and Willie Arthur Smith’s Marching Cobras performing in the auditorium will provide a variety of activity for this year’s attendees. In addition to the activities downtown on the day of the parade, the week holds plenty of other events located throughout Carthage including a car show, adult beverage tasting, gospel sing, and quilt show.     The Kansas Highway Patrol says one man is dead after a two-vehicle crash on U69 about two miles south of Pittsburg. It happened on August 20th, 2018 around 9:10 a.m. Authorities say 70-year-old Stephen Hite was driving a Ford Ranger south on U69. He was slowing to turn onto E. 510 Ave. and was rear-ended by a Chevy Malibu. Hite's truck overturned onto its roof. Both vehicles came to rest in the east ditch. Hite died at the scene.
