Southeast Band prepares for School Bus Races

Updated:
CHEROKEE, KANSAS -

Normally, it’s the Southeast Band who is cheering and showing their spirit at Lancer sporting events, but on Saturday September 5th, it’s the Band who needs the support.

Southeast has entered a bus in the upcoming School Bus Races at Humboldt Speedway.  Any prize money won by the Southeast bus will be donated towards replacing the Southeast Marching Band uniforms, which are more than 25 years old.

“In addition to the races themselves, there’s also the Spirit contest - the crowd can vote on the buses they like the best (be cheering) and there’s also a kid pull - kids will be pulling the bus to see how fast they can pull it,” said Southeast Band teacher Danica Gibson.

The bus used has been provided by Humboldt Speedway and on Friday the students decorated it with the Lancer logo, music staffs and flames.

Regardless of any winnings, Principal Larry Malle said the excitement generated by the competition is a nice way to start the school year.

“According to Mrs. Gibson they were pretty excited when they learned they were going to get to paint a bus,” Principal Malle said.  “Anytime you get a bunch of kids to do a positive thing it’s good for everybody.  This is kind of a neat little end of band camp week bonding activity.  Something you don’t get to do every day.”

“Obviously the kids are having a really great time today painting this bus so it’s really good for group moral and bonding to bring the group together,” Gibson said.

Adding to the excitement is that the man who volunteered to drive the bus is somebody most of the kids know and is very familiar with racing.  Ken Snyder raced on dirt tracks across the United States for more than 25 years, until 2008, and now he helps his granddaughter, Southeast junior Elizabeth “Izzy” Fornelli, and others race at MOKAN Dragway.  While Snyder has never raced a bus, he is a full time bus driver for Southeast.

“I like to give, I like racing dirt cars – it’ll be a dirt car when it comes time to race,” laughed Snyder.  “I’ve won lots of races at Humboldt.”

The School Bus Races are Saturday September 5 at the Humboldt Speedway in Humboldt, Kansas.  Pit gates open at 3:00 p.m.  Spectator gates open at 4:00 p.m.  The Kids Bus Pull starts at 6:00 p.m.   Races start at 7:00 p.m.  Admission is $10 for adults, Kids ages 6-13 are $5.00 and Kids under 6 are free.
