Gorillas earn #7 Preseason Ranking from AFCA

The Pittsburg State University football team earned the preseason No. 7 ranking in the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) NCAA Division II Top 25 poll released Monday (Aug. 17).

The Gorillas, who shared the 2014 MIAA Championship and posted an 11-2 overall record a year ago, received 557 points in voting of  a select panel of 32 Division II head coaches. Minnesota State, the 2014 national runner-up, earned the No. 1 ranking with nine first-place votes and 751 points. The Mavericks defeated Pitt State, 24-21 in overtime, in the second round of the 2014 playoffs.

Colorado State-Pueblo, the defending national champion, received 16 first-place votes and 747 points to earn the No. 2 preseason ranking. The Thunder Wolves were followed by Minnesota-Duluth (648 points), West Georgia (632 points) and Northwest Missouri (623 points) in the top five.

Pitt State returns 11 players (6 offense, 5 defense) who started five or more games during the 2014 season, including nine returning All-MIAA performers and two players who earned All-America honors a year ago.

The Gorillas open the 2015 season on Sept. 3 against Northeastern State.
