Could Joplin officials face criminal charges after release of audit?

A law enforcement agency says it has not been contacted about possible investigations into Joplin city officials after an audit report was released by the State of Missouri.

The Missouri state auditor said in her audit report of the City of Joplin that in January, the auditor's office notified appropriate law enforcement agencies concerning possible violations.

The auditor's office says law enforcement agencies were notified by phone.  Written documents were provided if the law enforcement agencies requested them.

But the auditor's office won't specifically say which agencies were called and requested written documents.

However, the Jasper County Sheriff's Office says it was never called by the auditor about her findings.

The auditor's office also says it had a verbal conversation with the Jasper County prosecutor, but it's unclear if written documents were sent to the prosecutor.  We have not been able to contact the Jasper County prosecutor.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol says it can neither confirm or deny it has been contacted by the auditor with her results.

A representative of the Missouri state auditor's office adds that it has not asked for more investigations.  The auditor's office has left it up to each law enforcement agency to determine if there are enough facts to support an investigation.

Today, Councilman Mike Woolston says he assumes he's being investigated by the FBI, but hasn't been contacted directly by the FBI.
