Joplin COC responds to state audit

JOPLIN, MISSOURI -

Chamber of Commerce President Rob O'Brian says many of the claims in the auditor's report are false, and the document is full of assumptions made up from financial data.

O'Brian says he was not in Texas in 2011 to meet with former master redeveloper Wallace Bajjali as the auditor alleges. He says the first trip in October was to meet with the Galveston Chamber of Commerce, and the second in December was to attend a large supply chain trade show at the Hyatt in Dallas. In the audit it says a parking garage receipt that Wallace Bajjali sent in says "met with city officials." But O'Brian claims that was not the purpose for the trip.

"I'm not going to say that somebody who was from Wallace Bajjali didn't walk through. But I don't recall it. And point of fact, I don't even know what parking garage the receipt was from. So what I can tell all of you and the public and our members is we had a very sincere legitimate economic development reason to be in Dallas for a trade show and not to meet with Wallace Bajjali. "

O'Brian says after the tornado the chamber was meeting with dozens of developers and strongly objects to the auditor's finding that the city was biased in bringing on Wallace Bajjali. He also says he believes the chamber has been more than transparent when it comes to reimbursements and providing its annual expense report to the city.
