CHC SEK Receives Almost $100,000 Dollar Grant Award for Providing Quality Care

Updated:
PITTSBURG, KANSAS -

The Community Health Center of Southeast Kansas has been recognized as a national leader in quality health care.

"Mainly because we are better on 10 out of 15 of our quality outcome scores than any of the other clinics in the nation,” says CHC SEK Chief Quality Officer Terry Schirk.

The Health Center now serves about $40,000 people in Southeast Kansas, many low-income residents, with about 45% of its patients uninsured

"Because we're the sickest region, we're also one of the most challenged regions. And so if you have a sicker population, meeting national benchmarks is not easy,” says CHC SEK CEO Krista Postai.

Clinic officials say the national recognition helps to defy the idea that if the care is free or low cost than it’s not good quality.

"We are the largest health center in Kansas now and it's an opportunity for us to take our income from operations. And we are a non-profit, and put it into activities that help the patient and improving quality always helps the patients,” says Postai.

The health center made excellent strides in improving nutrition and exercise counseling, diabetic care, combating hypertension, and appropriateness of medication for asthma and heart disease patients, but there are still areas to improve.

"One thing this year is that we're screening all of our patients for depression. That's a required measure for us and it's actually something that's become very important for all clinics throughout the nation,” says Schirk.

It's also working to enhance the workflow of its electronic medical record system, provide online access for making appointments, and to improve the overall quality of care.
