Volunteers Arrange & Deliver Flowers to Hospice Patients

Updated:
Joplin, MO -

Every Wednesday morning volunteers at Avalon Hospice get together to make flower arrangements for those living out their last months in hospice care.

"And that makes a big difference to 'em,” says volunteer Judith Batchelor.

Judith Batchelor has been putting the flowers together for five years, delivering about 50-80 bouquets to patients every week

"A lot of 'em it's a welcome surprise, and then after you don't do 'em when you do it for a while, they just really expect it and they look forward to it. and a lady who called me 'here comes my flower lady, here comes a flower lady." they got names for you, they just enjoy it tremendously."

It's not just volunteers giving back. All of these beautiful bouquets were donated by several area florists.

"There's a phrase, it takes a village. And it does. Because sometimes they have extra flowers, sometimes more than others,” says Volunteer coordinator Judi McNally.

Avalon Hospice has been running the Perennity Program for five years now, a cause volunteers work hard at.

A lot of people don't realize that by time you get to this point in your life, we've got a lot that have some good strong family dynamics, we've got some that don't. We've got some people that are alone through this. So we want to be supportive in any way that we can,” says McNally.

"It brings them joy and it feels like somebody cares for 'em, and somebody actually cares how they feel. And they just enjoy it so much because we're seeing 'em every week, every week without fail."

For more information about the Perennity Program and other volunteer opportunities at Avalon Hospice contact Judi McNally at (417) 782-6811.
