Joplin Police Officers React to Recent Police Shooting Deaths Across the Country

Updated:
JOPLIN, MISSOURI -

Joplin Police Department officers are on alert, after several recent shootings kill several officers in the line of duty across the country.

Even though the amount of officers shot and killed is lower this year than the same time last year, there have been more than a half dozen law enforcement officers killed in this past month alone. And today one is being laid to rest in Antioch, Illinois.

Captain Higginbotham of the Joplin Police Department says police perception is always at the front of mind, but that any line of duty death heightens officers’ awareness about their performance.

"Yes, I’d say there's a collective concern by more experienced officers that a lesser experienced officer might allow public perception to unduly influence their decision making during a moment that requires decisive action."

Captain Higginbotham says now more than ever police officers need community support as much as the community needs them.
