Joplin Public Library Receives Third Early Literacy Grant

Updated:
JOPLIN, MISSOURI -

The Joplin Public Library has received its third grant designed to enrich public library early literacy services for young children.  The Library is a recipient of $19,993 in “Racing to Read” funds, a grant administered by the Missouri State Library, made possible by the Institute of Museum and Library Services and Technology Act under the provision of the Library Services and Technology Act.

From September 2015 through April 2016, the Joplin Public Library and its partner agencies—Joplin Schools Parents as Teachers, Educare, and United Way Success By 6—will work together to host events aimed at improving parental knowledge of critical pre-reading practices.  The early literacy events will allow children and caregivers the opportunity to participate in a variety of hands-on activities and to receive a copy of a free book.

The grant funds will also allow the Library to purchase children’s tablets that will be available for check out.  These durable, pre-loaded Playaway Launchpad tablets will have learning apps and games just for preschoolers. Durable covers and no Internet connection make the devices hassle and worry-free.  They are perfect for preschoolers to play and learn!

The first Racing to Read event, an “Explore & Play! It’s Pirate Day!” program will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, September 19.  Families and caregivers of children ages one to five years will have to opportunity to participate in a hands-on, play-based program that focuses on parent-child interactions.  For more information on this and other “Racing to Read” events, contact Jeana Gockley at 417-623-2184 or visit the library’s website at www.joplinpubliclibrary.org.
