Pittsburg Schools Seek Input on Facilities Plans and Need to Expand

Updated:

Pittsburg school district  gives tours and asks citizens  for input for a facilities plan.

Visitors could see the current and old middle school today.

Increased enrollment district wide is amplifying  the need for some kind of expansion. The old Pittsburg high school and Pittsburg Middle school , building is at the heart of the debate. With an old pool inside, radiator heat and deterioration, one option is to tear it down. Another  option is to renovate which school officials say will cost more.

Some oppose demolition on Facebook asking to save the historic building built in 1921. Both plans would bring 5th graders to the middle school to make room  at the lower levels.

Middle school algebra teacher Doug Barto says, "With a new facility, that would give us some more room to expand our classes  and probably help out the elementary schools with their overcrowding."

There will be two community meetings  for residents to comment on expansion options.  One at 11;30 a-m and another at six p-m.

Both will be at the staff development center on 13th street.

There's no estimated price tag for the improvements yet.

The facilities committee will have a work session with the school board on the 28th bringing community recommendations.
