Pittsburg Active Transportation Master Plan Unveiled

Updated:
PITTSBURG, KANSAS -

A road diet, new sidewalks, and bike lanes are all part of a new ten-year master transportation plan unveiled today for the city of Pittsburg.

PedNet Coalition and Live Well Crawford County propose a North-South Corridor along Broadway Street from Centennial to Atkinson, and reducing Broadway from four lanes to two with a center turn lane and bike lanes on either side.

“Because you have no more instances of left turning vehicles stalling traffic, instead they can get over into the left turn lane, so it improves traffic flow. It has been proven to reduce automobile crashes. So it's great for motorists, primarily actually, would benefit motorists. But then it also has the capability of freeing up space for a bicycle land on each side as well,” says PedNet Coalition Consulting Director Robert Johnson.

The sidewalk plan for Broadway Street is at the top of the master plan list.

Other priority projects include a sidewalk project connecting the High School to Fourth Street, adding sidewalk around the YMCA, and a proposed Cow Creek Trail that runs from Wilderness Park to Lincoln Park, with a trail head at the Crawford County Historical Museum.
