Miami Police Dept. Expands Its Jurisdiction

The city of Miami, Oklahoma passes an ordinance to expand the police department's jurisdiction just outside the city limits.

Chief Thomas Anderson says his primary concern was highway 69A.

It’s a busy road, and there was often a question whether responding city police officers or the Oklahoma highway patrol had jurisdiction.

A fatality accident on the highway just outside the "Northeastern Tribal Health System" last month highlighted the problem.

The road was only annexed into the city to the center divider lane, so only half the highway was covered by the police.

Chief Anderson says "It's been just a constant battle. You had to know where you were on a map. Were you fifty feet from this pole or this intersection to where your jurisdiction started? We just really wanted to get rid of all that grey area.”

He says the police department's boundaries haven't been adjusted for at least two decades.
