Gorilla Volleyball Begins Final Road Trip

RELEASE FROM PITTSBURG STATE ATHLETICS:

PITTSBURG, Kan. -- The Pittsburg State volleyball team will head west to face No. 14 Washburn and Emporia State this weekend. The first serve on Friday will be 7 p.m. against the Ichabods and 4 p.m. in Emporia on Saturday.
 
Pittsburg State opens up the weekend at 1-19 after most recently falling to No. 16 Nebraska-Kearney and Fort Hays State at home.  
 
Maggie Highberger continues to lead the Gorillas with 130 kills, averaging 1.94 kills per set. Lana DaSilva follows closely behind with 128 kills and 1.88 kps. Erin Wolford blocks 1.00 balls per set, which is fourth in the MIAA. Taylyn Schwartz and Hayley Hansford continue to split setting duties, as the two seniors record 4.60 assists per set combined. Libero Ashlen Schwartz's 335 digs and 4.65 digs per set average are seventh in the MIAA.
 
No. 14 Washburn is currently 20-2 overall and 8-2 in MIAA play. They are ranked second in the MIAA standings, with their only losses on the season against Fort Hays State and Nebraska-Kearney.  Washburn is second the MIAA in aps (13.12), kps (14.00), and allow their opponents to hit a just a .141 clip as a team. They come in a close second to Emporia State in blocks with 170 total and 2.21 bps.
 
Leanna Willer and Sarah Vicory lead the Ichabods. Willer has 329 total kills on the season and Vicory hits a team-high .335 clip, which is fifth in MIAA. Vicory also leads the team and conference in blocks, posting 1.17 bps and 90 total on the season. Setter Liz Powell paces the Ichabods with nearly 10 aps and has aced 17 serves this season. Alyssa Carney digs up 5.28 bps for the Ichabods.
 
Emporia State brings an 8-12 overall record into the weekend, including a 3-7 in the MIAA. The Hornets lead the MIAA in blocks with 174 total, averaging 2.23 bps.
 
Shayla Cotman is the team leader in attack percentage (.300), blocks (1.12 bps), points (3.01 points per set). Josie Williams has team-high 189 kills this season. Emma Benton rounds out three-pronged attack with 162 kills and 15 aces. Kelly Holden has put up 354 digs from the back row to aid the Hornets defensively.
