Salvation Army Seeks Volunteers for Holiday Efforts

Joplin, MO -

The Joplin Salvation Army needs you as it gears up for the season of giving.

The Army begins taking request for holiday food baskets and toys this week.

Like last year it will transforms its lunch room into a gift distribution center.

Volunteers helped sort and box gifts last year for more than five hundred and thirty families.

But the army also needs bell ringers and those who can deliver gifts to nursing homes.

All of which can be rewarding to the volunteer.

Corps officer Major Beckie Stearns says, "When you're helping people and you watch families who go, ‘Wow! I couldn't do this without you,’ that helps bring joy to the volunteer. There are times you have to turn somebody away and  its difficult but again it’s helping us see the bigger picture which is there’s a need and we need to try to do our best to make that need met."

Stearns expects the need to be great this year. The Salvation Army needs the first wave of volunteers to help take registrations for assistance.

It begins Thursday at the Salvation Army at 320 East 8th street.

Those applying for help should bring a photo id, legal mail to show residency such as a utility bill or rental agreement, social security cards and proof of income for the past month.
