MODOT Prepares Its Snow Plow Fleet For Winter Weather

Updated:
JOPLIN, MISSOURI -

It's a bit odd to see snow plows out and about in the middle of fall, but MODOT does this drill every year.

"It's just all about getting ourselves ready for when it's the real deal,” says Southwest District Construction & Materials Engineer Steven Campbell.

Billy Barber has been driving for MODOT for almost a decade, but even for him it's good practice.

"If we got a real heavy snow things are covered up. Sometimes you don't even see mailboxes and you can knock 'em over…Anything like that, it's nice to know what you're route looks like before it actually snows and you have to push it,” says Barber.

With about three hundred trucks on the road plowing 21 counties in Southwest Missouri MODOT officials say coordination is key to getting the job done fast."

Campbell says "There's a lot of people working behind the scenes at the EOC, you know 'what's the status of your route?', the traveler information map, how are we updating that, who's responsibility that is, who do you call? Just making sure it's more or less as fine-tuned or well-oiled machine as we can provide."

"Checking the carbide on my blade to make sure the carbide is all good so you don't wear your blade off. They're really expensive to replace,” says Barber.

After sitting all year drivers check their trucks to make sure they're in tip top shape to handle the elements.

Campbell says "There are a lot of buried hazards when the snow flies. It could be an expansion joint on a bridge, it could be a razed median or whatever. Just so they can familiarize themselves with the areas they're going to be plowing, it's good for them to see that in the light of day.”

MODOT officials also say it's important drivers test out their routes before winter as minor changes are made to roads every year like adding new roundabouts, turning lanes, or interchanges.
