Gorillas Lose on the Road to #24 UCM



WARRENSBURG, Mo.-- The University of Central Missouri scored 27 unanswered points to break open a 7-6 game and pull away for a 34-6 victory over Pittsburg State University Saturday (Nov. 7) at Audrey J. Walton Stadium.
The Mules, ranked No. 24 in NCAA Division II, improved to 8-2 with the win, while the Gorillas slipped to 6-4.
UCM struck first in the contest with Ian Toalson breaking loose for a 70-yard touchdown scamper on a fake punt with 5:25 to play in the first quarter.
Pitt State got a pair of field goals, from 47 and 30 yards, from Chad Levin to trim the margin to 7-6.
The Mules countered with the first of two Billy Greco field goals in the game, a 39 yarder, to take a 10-6 lead at the half.
Quarterback Garrett Fugate fired a 79-yard touchdown pass to Andrew Bakker on a key third-down pass to give the Mules a 17-6 edge with 8:49 remaining in the third quarter.
Markel Smith added a 2-yard scoring run to cap a 10-play, 80-yard drive that extended UCM's lead to 24-6.
The Mules then added a back-breaking score with PSU quarterback was ruled to have fumbled the ball on a pass attempt and UCM's Josh Powell scooped up the ball and returned it 33 yards for a touchdown and a 31-6 lead with 13:36 to play in the game.
Greco closed out the scoring with a 36-yard field goal with 4:51 to play.
LePage completed 11 of 26 passes for 112 yards in the contest. He was sacked four times. Michael Rose rushed the ball nine times for 54 yards to lead the Gorillas ground gainers, while Marquise Cushon added 54 yards on four carries.
Demetrius Bernard made a team-leading eight tackles, including four stops behind the line of scrimmage.
The Gorillas will close out the regular season next Saturday (Nov. 14) by hosting the University of Central Oklahoma on Senior Day at Brandenburg Field/Carnie Smith Stadium.
